A permaculture farmstay and edible food forest in Udon Thani's Isan countryside.

Suwan Organic Farmstay is a working permaculture and agroforestry farm near Baan That in Phen district, Udon Thani, set on a few hectares halfway between Udon Thani city and Nong Khai. Manu, from Belgium, and his Thai wife Suwan started the farm in 2017 and run it without machinery or petrochemicals. At its heart is a forest-garden, a nurturing forest that functions as a natural ecosystem in which all the plants are edible, alongside an organic vegetable garden and rice fields.

The farm welcomes WWOOF volunteers who join hands-on work such as composting, planting, pruning, natural building and making organic fertilisers. Introductory classes in permaculture and natural building are offered to volunteers at no extra cost. For those who want to go deeper, Suwan runs a structured five-day permaculture workshop covering ethics, principles, design and practical techniques, and a separate fifteen-day internship taught by a qualified trainer that ends with a certificate of completion. Note that the five-day workshop is offered without certification, and these courses are not an accredited Permaculture Design Certificate from a permaculture institute.

Guests can stay full board in a dormitory or a private bungalow, with morning, noon and evening meals included. Other activities on the farm include Thai cooking classes with Chef Num, traditional silk and cotton weaving, eco-construction with adobe brick, and time to relax, fish and swim at the on-site pond. Whether you come to volunteer, learn or simply slow down, the farm offers an immersive way to experience tropical permaculture in northeastern Thailand.

The farm is at 238 Moo 16, Baan That, Phen district, Udon Thani 41150, in the Isan region of northeastern Thailand. It sits roughly halfway between Udon Thani city and Nong Khai, about 20 km from Udon Thani city and close to the Mekong and the Friendship Bridge to Laos. Contact the farm in advance for directions and to arrange your stay.
