Chiang Mai foundation preserving traditional farming and craft knowledge on a working food forest
Sangob Foundation is based at San Pa Yang in Mae Taeng district, Chiang Mai province, Thailand. Its stated mission is to preserve ancient artistic, agricultural and cultural knowledge, and it describes its projects as educational, working to perpetuate endangered customs including traditional agricultural practices, tribal music and dance, natural building and ethnic weaving. In Thai the word sangob (สงบ) means peaceful; the foundation chose the name in the belief that a world rich in diversity leads to a more peaceful and self-sustainable future.
Its permaculture work is practical rather than credentialled. The foundation states that it holds no PDC diplomas or other agriculture-related degrees, and that it learns by doing and expands its knowledge by collaborating with the farming community in Thailand. On its own land it grows a food forest, which it describes as a system designed by people to become a permanent, self-sustaining productive forest that needs very little work to maintain, and it treats the site as an experimental playground with its doors open to outside ideas and projects.
