Bunya Halasz is an ecologist, permaculture designer, environmental educator, school gardener and yoga practitioner. He is based in Bundjalung Country, the Northern Rivers region of northern New South Wales, Australia, and brings these fields of interest together to coordinate experiential retreats through his business, Growing Roots.
He completed his Permaculture Design Certificate in 1998 and has since worked in many areas of permaculture and organic farming in Australia and New Zealand, with a particular passion for food forests and community garden work. That interest led him to facilitate workshops, courses and festivals at Northey Street City Farm in Brisbane over a period of five years. He completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in resource and environmental management in 2004.
Through the lenses of permaculture, regenerative agroecology and successional agroforestry, he works as a designer, educator and gardening mentor. He teaches successional agriculture, syntropic farming and food forestry, getting down to the details of working with succession, and this material forms the backbone of Permaculture Design Course and Certificate 4 training he delivers at Byron Community College and at The Farm at Byron Bay.
