A working regenerative permaculture and syntropic farm in Mae Taeng, Chiang Mai
Sunshine Permaculture is a commercial regenerative farm in the Mae Taeng area of Chiang Mai, run by Avika Narula and Abhi Agarwal, who began farming here in 2021. Permaculture design is at the heart of the operation, and the team works across several regenerative frameworks: syntropic agroforestry in the tradition of Ernst Gotsch, the Regrarians approach, Soil Food Web methods, market gardening, and Holistic Management. The aim across all of it is to build healthy living soil and grow nutrient-dense food while regenerating the wider ecosystem.
The operation spans two sites. The original 35-rai Sunshine Permaculture Farm, whose layout was designed by Hannah Moloney, has been transitioning from market garden beds toward diverse fruit orchards. About five minutes away, the 55-rai Living Roots Farm, started in 2022, is being developed as a fully commercial regenerative farm integrating trees, vegetables and animals.
The farm sells certified-organic and heirloom produce direct to customers, shipping twice a week (every Tuesday and Thursday) from Chiang Mai and reaching most of Thailand within two to three days. Guests can also stay on the land through farm-stay accommodation at the Living Roots site, booked via Airbnb. Alongside the farm, the couple run Living Roots, a permaculture design and farming consulting practice.
This is a busy commercial farm rather than a drop-in attraction, with the team often away working on consulting projects. Visits are welcomed strictly by prior arrangement.
