Weed Day
Organization Type
Weeds are medicine.
Weed Day is based in Taiwan, run by two foraging artists, Tiffany and Zo. Conscious of the current city landscape and the ways humans interact with nature, they make weed tea and other everyday essentials from foraged weeds. When foraging they choose the more dominant and invasive plants, leaving more space for native species and resulting in a more biodiverse environment. To them, the weeds speak for the land and they are just messengers, telling stories of migration, of the soil conditions, and of the plants themselves and their characters.
Weed Day also founded a physical space, Grassland, in 2020. It functions as a community space, or third space, for people in the city to relax and feel safe to talk and share their lives with each other. It is also a platform for events, workshops and dialogue about the environment, and a space where they host people in need.
They run educational programming about the importance of weeds as part of life, serving the community where their space and their farm are situated, and through their artworks reach audiences abroad to create dialogue and help more people see weeds as medicine.
