Nursing lecturer at Musashino University exploring permaculture in university education

Emiko Tanaka is a lecturer at the Faculty of Nursing, Musashino University in Tokyo, Japan. Her work focuses on health promotion, community empowerment, planetary health and the educational value of community-based and nature-based activities.

She has been exploring how permaculture can be introduced into university education through field studies, project-based learning, collaboration with local practitioners and the Ariake Rooftop Commons, a rooftop community garden on the university campus. She is particularly interested in how these experiences can support student growth, well-being, social connection and a sense of agency, while creating more regenerative relationships among people, communities and the environment.
