EcoThailand Foundation
An environmental foundation supporting Gulf island communities in southern Thailand.
EcoThailand Foundation (มูลนิธินิเวศวิถี) is a Thai-registered charitable foundation based in Surat Thani province and active across Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, Koh Phaluai and the wider Gulf islands and southern mainland. It works as an environmental NGO and community network, supporting local groups to look after their own environment rather than running a single public site of its own.
Much of its hands-on work centres on waste. Through its composting and bio-waste programmes on Koh Phangan, the foundation has set up community composting sites across the island's three municipal areas, distributed free composting systems and mesh with advice, and helped divert organic waste from landfill and burning. One site has since grown into a small social enterprise.
The foundation also supports community organic gardens started by local groups and community leaders — first set up in 2020 as a response to the loss of tourism income — providing guidance, micro-grants and volunteers rather than running the gardens directly. It runs environmental education and workshops, often using a separate local organic farm as a teaching base, and is involved in tree planting, water quality, eco and community tourism, and youth education.
It sits adjacent to permaculture rather than being a permaculture-design body: a practical, community-focused environmental organisation working on composting, gardens, trees and education in the islands of the Gulf of Thailand.
