Oregon State University – Permaculture Design
Online permaculture education from Oregon State University, serving thousands worldwide
OSU Permaculture Design is listed on ThaiPermaculture.org as an international supporter of the Thai permaculture movement. Its founder, Andrew Millison, filmed at the Mab Ueang Agri-Nature Center in Chon Buri during the winter of 2024-2025, documenting the Kok Nong Na system for his global audience, and has confirmed his participation at IPC16 Thailand in November 2026.

The programme sits within the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Founded in 2009 by Millison, it has grown from a single experimental class into a comprehensive suite of online and on-campus courses that have served many thousands of students worldwide.

The programme offers a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC), an advanced climate resilience practicum and specialist courses in food forest design and water management, delivered through OSU’s Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) and Ecampus platforms. Its free Introduction to Permaculture massive open online course has enrolled over 45,000 students and more than 3,000 students have completed full site designs through the certificate programme. The curriculum emphasises real-world application, broad-scale farm planning, advanced hydrology and climate analogue design. Courses are developed and taught by a team of 15 experienced permaculture practitioners and ecological design specialists.

Beyond formal coursework, OSU Permaculture Design has produced two open-access textbooks – “Introduction to Permaculture” and “Permaculture Design: Tools for Climate Resilience” – both published under Creative Commons licences and freely available online. The programme’s educational media work, particularly Andrew Millison’s YouTube channel with over 100 million views and over 700,000 subscribers, has extended the reach of permaculture education far beyond the university, documenting regenerative projects across more than 15 countries and making complex design concepts accessible to a global audience.
